Deciding to do a wedding dance is a big step for many couples who may be unfamiliar with performing. Deciding on a song to dance to is one of the first things you'll need to decide on once you have agreed to do a dance. From old classics to new favourites, there is a huge selection of love songs you can choose from. Here's our quick guide and some evergreen suggestions for your wedding dance!
1. Old Classics and Evergreens
Fans of old classic movies and evergreen songs will be familiar with Waltz songs such as Moon River from the movie Breakfast at Tiffany's, Louis Armstrong's What a Wonderful World or Elvis' Can't Help Falling In Love. For more jazzy options suitable for the foxtrot, Frank Sinatra's The Way You Look Tonight, or Nat King Cole's L-O-V-E are great options that are always suitable for the occasion.
2. New Popular Favourites
Ed Sheeran's love songs have been extremely popular choices for wedding dances over the past few years - Perfect and Thinking Out Loud are definitely some of the top trending options for slow love ballads. For couples looking for a lively number that most guests can identify with, take inspiration from movies and musicals such as La La Land or Disney songs such as Aladdin's Whole New World and Beauty and the Beast.
If there is a particular movie or song that has been especially meaningful or memorable for you and your partner, it would also be very significant for the both of you to dance to it on your big day.
3. Slow and Soothing
If you and your partner prefer to take a notch down on tempo and have a slow song to sashay to, consider beautiful soothing tunes such as Etta James' At Last, Ellie Goulding's How Long Will I Love You and Christina Perri's A Thousand Years. Some couples may prefer not to have the stress and pressure of remembering dance steps of a choreography. 4. Things to watch out for
Make sure the lyrics are appropriate for the occasion! Some ballads or pop songs may have great tunes that seem romantic and perfect for a wedding, however some may contain sad lyrics about a breakup...not the best for a happy occasion!
Work with your dance instructor to see if the song tempo is appropriate for the dance style or choreography that you have in mind. For instance, the Waltz should be danced to 3-beat music while Foxtrot is danced to 4-beat music. There may also be different arrangements available for the same song that is modified to be in certain dance style tempos, so do check with your instructor on the best option for you!
